Something similar happened to me. The firewire external drive would mount and performed fine for a while and then suddenly would not mount and could not be persuaded to. I was able to mount another pocket drive for a while but reverting the other ext drive revealed no change. tried swapping leads and checking firm ware and all that nonsense but nothing doing. Got it to mount by USB but too slow to be usable so got the info off it to another machine with USB2 and got rid of the disc.

Later, bought a new firewire device (scanner) and it works fine except that since doing so USB will not work properly and peripherals previously plugged into the power Belkin hub which worked fine now do not. I had thought it was a fault with just one of the devices but, if I take it out of the hub and plug it straight into the mac it works fine. Why this should happen I cannot fathom but I am hoping to upgrade my G4 to a G5 and will then run the scanner on USB2 and not use Firewire at all. I think there is something inherently wrong with firewire, right down to the stupid ill fitting plugs and I will not miss it.

Cheers

Drew
