I've had many PCs over the years, as well as macs, and I don't think I've ever had a PC motherboard spontaneously fail on me. I've blown a couple up my not taking the proper precautions before I messed with them, but that's my fault. No, in my experience motherboards are pretty robust.

As someone has pointed out on UseNet, PC World had loads of PC logicboards in stock, because they're always failing; few PowerMac boards die, so you have to wait three whole days.
