This might be a bad compiler option in the configure script. You may need to
hack it to get it to work.

I get this error quite often under BeOS PPC where the compiler is MWCC. The
compiler clearly *can* generate executables, its just that configure will
attempt to run a specific command, fail and report an error that the
configure script thinks is valid.
