A while ago a question was posed if anyone was still on OS9 or older.
I posted a response to say that I knew plenty of places that were.

Interestingly one of these studios has decided to go over to X, converting a
few machines at a time and installing native applications to negate
operating in classic.

As my only experience of X was to find out how to turn it off to make my
then new QS boot in 9, I have been an interested spectator.

To my dismay the process seems to be quite a headache. Networking to OS9
machines is a major problem. Some of the existing OS9 G4 machines and the
several beige boxes that do basic but necessary operations cannot be seen by
the X machines. Fonts available in one program are not available in another.
Setting up is a pain, jobs don't print, and to my astonishment, despite all
I have read and heard, X does crash. I have witnessed it with my own eyes.
One machine has been down for most of two days, a second is hobbling along
hamstrung by network problems. With so much work going on this has proven a
disaster and very late hours have been worked to get projects out - a nice
bit of overtime for me :-)

As mine ain't broke I don't think I'll fix it just yet.

Just what I've seen.

Nick
