Interesting responses to my post so far - looking forward to reading more.

I would like to point out that my comments are just observations and I am
purely a bystander. I have had no part in setting up these machines.

(My assistance was requested when trouble hit but for once I had to say that
never using the system I knew nothing about X and couldn't help - indeed I
know more about Windows! :-) )

I would have liked for it to be all a breeze - it would make me more
confident when I have to go to OSX.

The guys who have been doing the installation whilst not 'IT Managers' have
years of Mac experience and are typical knowledgable Mac users, more than
capable in an OS9 and earlier.

Re OS9, my experience on my own machines is very good. I cannot remember
when 9 last crashed on my QS - this is not rhetoric but a fact. Previous
machines have been good too. My 7300 under 8.1 and then 8.6 and 9 was solid.
It was pretty good with a G4 450 card too.

Two years ago I was allocated on-site an old 7600 with a G3 card under OS9.
It ran for months on end without a crash - I loved it but it became too slow
for photoshop work. It still works well but now does more lowly jobs.

I have encountered very crashy old world machines, usually because the
operators have loaded all sorts of garbage onto them and don't know the
first thing about housekeeping.

At least when I do eventually go to X I'll have a few experienced guys to
call on when I get problems!
