Eclipse and Zen have both been good for us. Not sure why we changed from Eclipse now, but I think it was because we used them for dialup, but their broadband offers were not as good as Zen's. They have an excellent reputation now.

Hello folks,

In coming weeks I intend to ditch dial-up and go to broadband; I'm
also intending to go wireless as well. Sadly I am a complete ignoramus

as well as other top tips, would be warmly welcome

Hi Giles
Bt Broadband do a recommend a friend scheme whereby everyone
involved
gets a 10 to 20 kickback depending on the service chosen or donate to
childline if you wish.
I can recommend BT based on my own experience as a user and as a BT
broadband engineer. They will sell you a variety of modems and routers
including wireless which arrive on about the same day as your service
is enabled. If you know anyone who works for BT or is a shareholder
they can get discounts on the stuff for you.

[A/] I on the other hand have had disastrous experiences with BT and would
never recommend them to anyone. Just cos they are the biggest phone provider
doesn't mean they are the best DSL provider.
I'm not going to go into exact details but for a start you won't be able to
connect to your POP3 email (they of course want you to use BT email
addresses and tie you to the company for the rest of your life, since having
started using an email addy one is usually reluctant to have to advise all
your contacts if you need to change)
And for second they couldn't provide me with adequate hardware (in my case
an Ethernet modem/router, they only do USB for connection to one pc which if
you're networking is next to useless)
And the supposed wireless router doesn't in fact come wireless capable, only
wireless ready. You have to then buy an additional PCMCIA wi-fi card to put
in the damn thing.
I can happily say that I'll never use BT for anything other than a simple
phone line.
