I think we are a bit sensitive here about our culture, or part of it, being overwhelmed by foreign influence - in this case, American spelling. This is understandable, but not worth squabbling over. Instead, we should each do our quiet bit to promote our preference. I have to confess to finding Americanisms irritating, however illogical that may sometimes be; after all, some of them pre-date our present form of a particular word.

Interestingly, Chambers 20th Century (1983) has no separate entry for program, merely listing it as an alternative spelling of programme, with the note 'mainly U.S., and esp. in relation to computers'.

Prescriptive spelling, grammar, and such like, are, I believe, rather out of fashion these days, Roger.
