I'd have liked a specific other model in the subject line, but really wasn't entirely sure what to put! Basically have a selection of old Macs that are largely unused at the moment (030, 040, Nubus PPC and one PCI PPC with dead HD). I got my hands on an tray loading iMac just before Christmas the plan was to have that sitting as a second machine on my desk to get more familiar with it while on one hand keeping my eye out for some more memory (currently 64M) and on the other continuing my search for a half decent B&W that wouldn't break the bank - one or other of those would get me where I want to be, which is running OS X.
Anyway, then along comes the Mac Mini which looks very interesting and is nicely priced - nice enough to tempt me in fact. The main issue I have with it is the upgrade path. Coming from the x86 world (not Windows, although it is a fact of life over there, but Linux) I have a tendency to build my own boxes and chop and change things around. I'm pretty sure I can live with it, although I've yet to confirm pieces I've read about requiring a Mac dealer to upgrade the memory (which won't go down too well with me!), so relative performance is probably the main issue. So, a question for anyone who has used one, and more familiar with Mac world performance that I am - how does it stack up against the rest of the range. The price point is good for me, but could I do better elsewhere in the range, or with a second user box? I guess the size would help out too as the iMac I have is still awaiting the space to sit in, whereas the Mini could slot in nicely and share a monitor :) I really should get it sorted soon as its been on the cards for way too long now - but then so has my replacement laptop (around 18 months I think) and that is damaged to the point of flaky behaviour and has been saved from the brink of death way to many times now! Shame it has to be a x86 box really, but for work it has to be able to run Windows and Linux for ease of on site testing for customer systems :( -- Paul Tansom | Aptanet Ltd. | http://www.aptanet.com/ -- Mac UK is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... 123Inkjets.com <http://lowendmac.com/ad/123inkjets.html> Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> Mac UK list info: <http://lowendmac.com/lists/mac-uk.shtml> --> AOL users, remove "mailto:" Send list messages to: <mailto:[email protected]> To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For digest mode, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subscription questions: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Archive: <http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-uk%40mail.maclaunch.com/> iPod Accessories for Less at 1-800-iPOD.COM Fast Delivery, Low Price, Good Deal www.1800ipod.com
