We both bought a G5 iMac last November and have found them excellent so
far.

I'd join one too, for similar reasons. There's nothing like tapping
into the brains of people who've already solved your problem.
I'm toying with the idea of buying a mini, but only because of a
roundabout process.
What I'd really like is an iMac G5, since it best matches my needs,
has the right spec, and is about what I can afford.
But: I've been really put off the idea by dozens of reports of dodgy
midplanes getting too hot and warping, or giving off horrible burning
smells. (Has anyone on this list got an iMac G5 and experienced that
sort of problem?)
As a result of that I took another look at the Mac mini, and gave
serious thought to getting one with plenty of RAM and a cheap external
HDD. I could even buy a third-party LCD monitor and still spend less
than I'd shell out on the iMac.
As always, you get what you pay for. No doubt I'll get annoyed with G4
speeds after a while, and start moaning that I should have got a G5.
