Er...what is a midplane?

According to Apple's service guide (http://docs.info.apple.com/ article.html?artnum=86812) it is an assembly containing quite a lot of the computer's components: The Mid-plane assembly for the original iMac G5 includes the main logic board, the G5 processor, modem card, lower fan, input/output ports, AirPort antenna, built-in Bluetooth module and antenna (if the computer has Bluetooth capability). If any of these parts require service, please see an Authorized Service Provider.

The Mid-plane assembly for the iMac G5 (Ambient Light Sensor) includes the main logic board, the G5 processor, modem card, lower fan (in 20-inch iMacs), input/output ports, AirPort antenna, built-in AirPort/Bluetooth module and Bluetooth antenna. If any of these parts require service, please see an Authorized Service Provider.

Ben.

I'm toying with the idea of buying a mini, but only because of a roundabout process.

What I'd really like is an iMac G5, since it best matches my needs, has the right spec, and is about what I can afford.

But: I've been really put off the idea by dozens of reports of dodgy midplanes getting too hot and warping, or giving off horrible burning smells. (Has anyone on this list got an iMac G5 and experienced that sort of problem?)

My wife's iMac G5 (bought in January) hasn't given her any problems. It's a really nice machine, she is very pleased with it.
