If it won't eject with a paperclip it's likely the mechanism is jammed, so that 
probably won't help. Worth a shot though. Try something stiffer, like athin 
screwdriver, but if it really won't let go you need a new one. Also be careful 
where you aim the paperclip. In some CD drives the emergency release tab is 
very small and hard to hit right from the little hole. You may have missed it 
and be pressing on the chassis of the drive.

On the hard disk front I boosted the speed of my B&W a lot by just installing a 
7200rpm drive with an 8MB buffer (Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 80GB). It surprised 
me how much difference it made, and it's much quieter too.

As far as OS goes I recommned 10.3 for older G3 machines. 10.4's revised 
graphics system tends to drag on older graphics cards. The CPU actually isn't 
as big a problem as it might appear, it's the graphics chipset that is slow in 
10.4 IMHO, unless you start doing serious heavy work, or using iChat AV. YMMV.
