You probably need to delete the older copy. If you click-and-hold on the Dock icon there's an option to 'Show in Finder'.

First make a backup from the one with your addresses (File/Backup... from the menu). After that relaunch the remaining one and see if it finds your data. If not, choose the revert to backup option.

Spotlight found a folder called "address book" inside library/ application support. I wonder if this is the one that's causing the problem- or maybe its the one that
has the data in it?


It is (Users/~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook), although that should be AddressBook rather than Address Book.
