For what it's worth, you can start an iPod in Target Disk mode (much like 
holding down Command-T when you reboot a Mac):
1) Reset the iPod (hold down Play & Menu)
2) WHILST it's rebooting, hold down ffwd & rewd

The iPod screen will show a little Disc spinning, and will not sync with iTunes 
when you plug it in (it will just mount on the Desktop).

Music Files are stored in the folder iPodControl/Music (not usually visible in 
Finder, but perfectly accessible with the Terminal).
