.........and any comments/opinions? I have been after a decent sound card for the dual G5 2Ghz? It's an PCI-X motherboard with 8 slot bank, so compatability isn't an issue. Basically want decent sound quality, many of the USB speakers are very poor quality and have taken back quite a few. Not a musican or anything, just want good sound quality when playing DVDs and watching TV.....and speakers would be something like the Edirol MA7A? The G5 is in my Den, not an opera house, so quality rather than quantity is the criterion! Just after other user's opinions before taking the plunge.
Best option by far in my opinion is a decent Home Cinema amp with S/ PDIF inputs, a pair of expensive Hi-Fi speakers and run the audio off the optical S/PDIF jack on the back of the G5. The onboard sound controllers on the PowerMacs are usually good enough and with a digital link you won't suffer the signal loss you get over the cheap interconnects that come with computer speakers. If that doesn't yield the quality you expect then sit something like an Edirol UA-20X or UA-1D on the USB port and link the optical to that.
My desk has a slightly less grande affair - I used a MiniDisc deck that doubles as a pretty effective DAC, hooked to a pair of AppleDesign Speakers (don't laugh, they whip the behind off any computer speakers I've ever owned!). I use an iMac G4 and a little Xitel MD-PORT DG-2 optical USB module. Works astonishingly well. Only thing I dislike is I had to ramp the treble up in iTunes 'cause the AppleDesign speakers have rather a muddy sound. It's a bit of a bugger because there's nothing wring with the treble response on them I think it's just a deficiency in the internal amp.
