Just a quick word about my excellent experiences with Maxtor desktop hard disks.
Over the last few years I've used several Maxtor desktop drives which have been used in various machines run 24/7, rarely and under 'normal' use (daily on/off stuff). They have been low/mid spec drives of 40-80GB. So far they have been very reliable. Here's hoping they continue to do so!
