FWIW- this seems not to be true. Now that I really pay attention this
external drive seems to be on- spinning- all the time and I hear it spin
down as I turn the machine off- the only time it is truly off is when I
"eject" that drive and it really does shut itself down then. Maybe that's
what I should have been doing all along- ejecting it after booting/waking
up whenever it wasn't going to be used, so effectively keeping it turned
off/inactive. Perhaps it would have lived a bit longer that way.
