Yes - the vital difference is an actual disconnect of power to the Mac - not just shutdown. I also read on Macintouch of unmounting before shutdown as an extra step for the paranoid. How far does one go? Regarding your woes - (thanks for detailing) It occurred to me that you may be suffering from spikes and brownouts (fluctuations in power supply?) I thought an anti surge should deal with this but I know fluctuations in voltage can adversely affect equipment. I like my LaCie triple D2 but it only takes a bit of instability and all you are left with is a solid case. Incidentally a cheap firewire enclosure from eBay was hopeless out of the box though it works fine as a USB drive. Probably needed a firmware update but couldn't track anything down at the time. I have read that specs for Hard drives are lower than yesteryear in terms of expected life but don't recall the source or the details. all the best Brian -- Mac UK is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... 123Inkjets.com <http://lowendmac.com/ad/123inkjets.html> Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> Mac UK list info: <http://lowendmac.com/lists/mac-uk.shtml> --> AOL users, remove "mailto:" Send list messages to: <mailto:mac-uk@mail.maclaunch.com> To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For digest mode, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subscription questions: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Archive: <http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-uk%40mail.maclaunch.com/> iPod Accessories for Less at 1-800-iPOD.COM Fast Delivery, Low Price, Good Deal www.1800ipod.com
