Yes - the vital difference is an actual disconnect of power to the Mac - not
just shutdown.
I also read on Macintouch of unmounting before shutdown as an extra step for
the paranoid. How far does one go?
Regarding your woes - (thanks for detailing) It occurred to me that you may
be suffering from spikes and brownouts (fluctuations in power supply?)
I thought an anti surge should deal with this but I know fluctuations in
voltage can adversely affect equipment.

I like my LaCie triple D2 but it only takes a bit of instability and all you
are left with is a solid case.

Incidentally a cheap firewire enclosure from eBay was hopeless out of the
box though it works fine as a USB drive. Probably needed a firmware update
but couldn't track anything down at the time.

I have read that specs for Hard drives are lower than yesteryear in terms of
expected life but don't recall the source or the details.
