Hi Brian,
amongst the intel furore, I had totally missed that bit out. So intel macs
won't boot off a FW drive?
I believe this is presently the case. I also believe Apple will work with
Intel to bring firewire functionality in Intel up to par (hopefully better!)
with the G Macs.
I don't know this last bit but its my best guess.
Its a bios thing - don't ask me the details.
Intel Mac also don't boot into Open firmware and I don't think they run FW
800 yet. In fact they are mostly useful for the consumer end as many Pro
aspects await further development - software and hardware.
For various reasons things have to be rushed to market. Often less than
complete. Its the way the market works.
It's not quite that bad. The Intel Macs will boot from FW drives - what
they won't do is boot from FW drives that have been partitioned on
PowerPC Macs because they use a new partition scheme. So you cannot use
a single portable drive to rescue both your Intel and PowerPC machines.
Open Firmware has been replaced by the Extensible Firmware Interface.
EFI allows some of Open Firmware's functionality, such as holding the
option key down and selecting an alternative boot disk.
It's EFI that is largely responsible for people not being able to run
Windows on their Intel Macs (so far). Windows XP requires an old-style
bios to boot up, whereas Vista will work with EFI.
