Blank screen with a flashing prompt?

I'd try resetting PRAM if you haven't already. I had a lot of trouble
booting into MacOS X when I updated my beige G3 - kept on getting the old
OpenFirmware prompt, but without the Keyboard working (so could not type
any commands etc.) Usually, resetting the PRAM from a cold boot worked.
The jump from Classic to OS X is scary. Well worth the panic though ;-)

I realise you're in a slightly different situation, but it might help.
