Unfortunately, I don't think the X11 version will be workable in my mother's elementary-school environment.

Why ? I remember I have an old X11 / XFree somewhere too, and even a Jaguar installed with SRX645 + SRC680 sources :)

It's not a technical issue; I remember installing various versions of X on old MacOS X versions before Apple released their own X11 port. The problem is a social one: it's hard enough to get the teachers to switch to new software as it is...the added hurdle of having something that looks and acts so foreign to other MacOS software seems too much. At least, that was my mother's reaction when I showed her the X11 version.

It's sounding like the best course of action may be for them to stick with AppleWorks on the old machines until they are ready to upgrade, switch to OpenOffice.org on the newer machines (the main competition for them is iWork, which also requires new MacOS versions), using .doc and .xls formats for interchange. However, I'll give a 10.3 compile a try in a month or so, as the ability to work on older MacOS versions would be a big selling point for OOo.
