One solution that I used when running the X11 OO.o on Mac was to put the path to the executable in my Applications menu in X11. Starting from there, and bypassing the OO.o startup script worked every time for me.

I believe the path that you want to add is /Applications/OpenOffice.org 2.4.app/Contenst/MacOSX/soffice, but that is from memory so might be a little off.--I now only run Aqua developer builds, so I don't have access to an X11 build right now to verify it.

I also use a recent build of X11 from Mac OS Forge, though it is apparently only for Leopard.
