Success! The 0.9.3 build seems to do the trick. I've just completed an extremely large iTunes import without any problem. This was done using the normal multi-threaded mode of sshfs-static-debug with the -d switch. I will test the whole process again without -d to make sure it isn't hiding the problem.
What was your hunch?
