A few things come to mind:

1) Re <http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/wiki/FAQ> question 4, highlights

and

I wonder whether <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301711>

remains true in Mac OS X 10.5; and whether that list of affected
services is

(I don't have 10.5 to check.)

2) muCommander <http://www.mucommander.com/>

<http://www.mucommander.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=509>

3) cp command

In Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) the options for cp include:

> -X Do not copy Extended Attributes (EAs) or resource forks.

man1/cp.1.html>

4) For working with MS office formats, prefer NeoOffice.org to
Microsoft Office

formats-on-WebDAV-mounted-volumes-tf4783678s6741.html>

In brief: the Microsoft way of working with volumes is undesirable.

Implicit in (2) and (3) is:

* recognise that Finder (which does much more than simply find) is
essentially preserving the edits that you make to files and/or their
metadata/extended attributes; and that battling against preservation
may be a battle we can't win :-)

There's actually a fifth thought but I'll spin that into a separate
thread...

Graham
