NFS works fine too, as long as you are not worried about confidentiality.

You've checked that you can ssh as root to that box, of course. Most Linux distros forbid logging on as root from ssh for obvious security reasons.

On Linux, add a line to /etc/exports for the fs and start nfs. Then cd /net/hostname/path on the macosx box to invoke the autofs mount of your NFS share.

Other than macfuse, any other simple solutions that work on snow
leopard for connecting to a local linux machine? Samba I suppose.
Anything else?

I am using the standard kernel that comes with snow leopard. apps are

I haven't had any problems with it yet in the pure 64-bit kernel mode, but i will notify you all in case something goes wrong. I'm using it with all the write-caching / speed-improving options disabled, to protect my precious
data on those NTFS disks.
But, as Erik just said, i wouldn't recommend trying this unless you (think you) know what you're doing. I'm using it in combination with the NTFS-3G
driver.

No, it doesn't 'work'. It's not fully adapted for reentrancy and
multi-threaded operation. It will sooner or later crash your computer or
corrupt data.
If you're using the purely 64-bit kernel in Snow Leopard (which you
shouldn't be, as it's currently only supported for usage on Xserve
hardware), you have to live without MacFUSE for the moment.

Try to look for the 2.1.7 beta version on google, it was specifically
compiled to work on SL 64.
It works here!
