I have an HP 3330 All-in-One (printer/copier/scanner/fax) on my home
network, connected via a print server that is not an HP JetDirect. I'm
not at home, so can't give you the model of the print server, but I
believe it cost me less than $100 at CompUSA.

This HP 3330 uses HP Director for scanning and remote faxing, but I can
print directly to it on the network by simply setting it up in OS X's
Printer Setup Utility. I have not been able to get the scanner to work
over the network, though it does work if directly connected to a
computer via USB. Since I have a laptop, I just move it over next the
printer/scanner, unplug its USB cable from the print server and plug it
directly into my Powerbook to do scans.

The one advantage of the Jet Direct _may_ be that it _might_ allow the
scanning and/or remote faxing features in your AIO to work in a
networked environment, but you would need to ascertain that with HP --
and even then I wouldn't take their word for it. At most electronic
stores you can buy equipment, try it out and return it within 30 days,
no questions asked.
