Insist on an "optical" zoom lens (at least 36mm to 80mm, 35mm equivalent).
Never used a zoom? Try one. You'll never go back.
Ignore digital zoom.
3 megapixels or more.
Fotografers like to crop pictures for better composition. Doing so
cuts picture resolution. When the ad says "print 4"x6" pix", read it
to mean "print pix cropped to 3.5"x5" pix."
Splurge on RAM. Why not be able to take 100 high-resolution pictures
every time?
I bought my camera on the internet. When I opened the box, I was
astonished to find a camera about the size of a pack of cigarettes.
That's small enough to carry with you most of the time. When I shop
for anything needing spousal approval, I snap a picture, rather than
trying to describe the item, or sending her to see it.
I have no experience with today's more automated printing, but with
my printer, the pictures do not come out looking like what you see on
the screen. Paper, too, makes a big difference, so when you print a
"test picture" on plain paper, it does not look like what you'll get
on the brand name, $0.40/sheet foto paper. My printer has about 3
dimensions of settings, making more than 20 permutations and
combinations, making printing slow and tedious.
