I just bought a Sony Cybershot and I love it, but the biggest downside
is that the darned Memory Sticks are essentially twice as expensive as
SD or Compact Flash. For what I paid on a 512 MB Memory Stick you can
get a 1 GB Compact Flash. So that cost is something of an issue.

If you want to print your photos there's another downside to the Memory
Stick--not all the digital photo-finishing stations accept the Memory
Stick Pro. I'm talking those self-service print stations like at
Walgreens, where you insert the card and print out the photos you want.
The issue is that these stations support the older Memory Stick format
but not always the new higher-density Memory Stick Pro. It's way
confusing and not something that I'd want a casual user to have to deal
with.

For those two reasons reasons, I'd unfortunately not recommend the Sony
models for a casual user. Much as I like the Sony that I bought.

Subject: MacGroup: recommendations for ~$200 digicams?

Hey Folks,

Any recommendations for ~$200 digicams? I'm on the lookout for my
stepdaughter's boyfriend.

I've looked through some of the 4MP reviews at steves-digicams, but
quickly have become overwhelmed.

Should the type of memory card weigh on the decision? Should I care
about proprietary vs. standard AA battery types?

If the main user of the camera is interested in point-and-shoot, and
would most likely never use anything other than an automatic mode, can
money be saved by buying a simpler camera, or has it become the case
that more complicated possibilities (like shutter-speed priority etc)
are always present in cameras with better lenses and better sensors?

Any tips would be appreciated. Back to reading reviews.

Bill
