I, too, have been having trouble booting.

The computer freezes with a blank dark blue screen.

If I then push the off button twice and hold down the [X] key,
it reboots just fine in OS X.

If I then push the off button twice and and hold down the [C] key,
it will reboot from the TechTool Pro CD
but NOT from the Mac Install CD (with Disk First Aid).

I think the problem is with extensions,
but why would the Install CD have problems?

I'll write down your advice below,
so I can try it next time I have a problem.

When TechTool finds a damaged file it cannot fix,
I try to restore from a back-up.

Might I do better with a complete re-install?

I treasure this list,
and much appreciate the volunteered help.
