This sounds like a damaged install CD.

Extensions on your hard drive are not the problem with booting off a CD 
because they have not been loaded. It is possible that your parameter 
RAM is messed up. You might want to reset it, just for fun. (Hold down 
command+option+p+r all at once when you reboot. Let the machine bong 
three or four times. It's also said that it works better, if you do it 
with only one hand.)

When you restore, you have to be sure the permissions are restored 
correctly for X. Have you tried repairing the permissions?

If you've messed around with a lot of files, a reinstall would 
certainly give you back the correct permissions.
