That's because the AOL client will only talk to AOL, so it checks to 
make sure you are set up for AOL and sets you that way, if it finds 
otherwise. Earthlink is just a general Internet provider, and no 
software is going to check for it because no software is Earthlink 
specific.

I suspect the SMTP server is set wrong in your mail program. It's 
probably set to an AOL SMTP server, and AOL won't let an Earthlink 
account use it's resources. (Or vice versa.)
