IMHO you need the RAM.

However, in very short order, you'll be needing the disk space,  
too; ...so, get them both!

I've seen LaCie drives cheaper, but they're with a USB interface.  If  
you are going to use it for a non-intensive storage function where  
speed is not critical, a USB LaCie drive of the capacity you want can  
be had from a number of places (MacMall, etc.), and the LaCie site  
may have them as clearance or even a refurb. unit or two.    :-)
