I just cancelled my .Mac account last week. I started here:
http://www.apple.com/support/dotmac

And got the following response:

"Thank you for contacting .Mac Customer Support.

Apple accepts cancellations of .Mac memberships only during the first 30
days of membership.
If your .Mac account was created or renewed within the last 30 days and
you wish to cancel it, first log in to .Mac and retrieve any data that
you would like to preserve. To learn how to remove your data, visit
<http://www.mac.com/1/mac_faq.html> and click Data Preservation near the
top of the page.
After retrieving your data, reply to this message and supply the following:

1. Your .Mac user name
2. Your billing address
3. Your phone number
4. Your birthday
5. A different email address, to which Apple will send confirmation that
your .Mac account has been canceled, if you so desire

Apple will verify your information and cancel your account. Your credit
card will be charged for the number of days your account was active.

Sincerely,

The .Mac Billing Support Team

I was inside the 30 day period, but I'm sure with a little pushing they
can cancel outside of the 30 day window.

Any .Mac members might benefit from un-checking that auto-renew box
unless you're absolutely sure.
