I said I was going to set this aside for a few days, but I was reading my
well worn copy of OS X: The Missing Manual, and it says when you set up an
ABS for the first time, don't mess with Airport Admin., just use Airport
Setup Asst. So I thought I'd try that.

Here's what I did:
1) started with modem turned off, ABS unplugged, iBook off
2) connected ethernet cable to ABS, turned modem on and waited for all the
lights to come on.
3) stuck paper clip (Corner Office brand, jumbo size, standard smooth
finish) in reset hole, plugged in ABS, waited a good 60 seconds, removed
paper clip
4) booted iBook
5) went into Airport Asst... but it didn't see the ABS... so I unplugged and
replugged the ABS, and voila! it appeared in Airport Asst.
6) I went through all the setup screens, told it to use DHCP, etc.
7) Started up Safari and I was surfin'

I wish I knew what I did differently on this attempt: was it procedure for
hooking up the cable and turning things on, was it using Airport Asst.
rather than Airport Admin.... or was it just the work of digital gremlins.

Next step, I want to install a hub so I can share the DSL connection between
the PC and the iBook. You guys please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought
I would use a hub rather than a router since I have two assigned IP
addresses. The PC and iBook would use DHCP to get their addresses from the
DHCP server. If there's a better way to do it, please let me know.

This forum has been a big help, now I'm going to have to start coming to the
meetings and begin really learning this stuff,
Tony
