I had a problem similar to this last summer. My keyboard got confused, 
and I actually went all the way to reinstalling the operating system 
before I figured out what was going on, and then I felt really stupid.

It turned out there's a logic board in the keyboard that got confused. 
If you turn the power off to the keyboard, it will reset itself. I 
forgot that my keyboard was plugged into a powered USB hub, so doing 
things like shutting down the computer didn't reset the keyboard. Once 
I unplugged the keyboard and then plugged it back in, everything was 
fine.
