This is by far the worst part of the 'new' interface. As Jerry said, it 
is much better under Panther, but it still is a pain in the butt.

I would suggest one of two pieces of shareware to get things back to 
tolerable:

MaxMenus from Proteron Software allows nice corner menus which are 
better than the old Apple Menu.

or

Ittec from Balance Software is a pretty good substitute for FinderPop, 
so it allows navigation through hierarchical menus from wherever you 
click in the Finder, allows control-clicking on a file and simply 
navigating to wherever you want to move it etc. It isn't pintware, and 
there is no hilarious manual to read, but it is very functional.

Sure, Apple should not have tossed out all the niceness of the old 
interface. One of these might make you happier again.
