Imagewriters (Imagewriter is an Apple Computer, Inc. brand name) are an
older technology called "impact printers". These operate very similar
to typewriters in that they have a ribbon that passes over the paper
and the print head pops the ribbon to place a little dot on the paper.
These types of printers were very popular for quite some time, but due
to the limitations of the technology, one could only achieve a certain
maximum resolution for any printed image. Ink jet and bubble jet
printers came along to replace the venerable Imagewriter, but there are
still quite a few being used today. One can find parts and supplies for
Imagewriters, but I really don't recommend them for anything but
low-resolution proof copies.

p.s. BTW Marta,
If the printer is flashing the replace cartridge light, you should go
ahead and do so. I have been told by folks that running the ink dry can
damage the print head. You might have a cartridge that has an air
pocket or something similar in it that is preventing the ink from
leaving the cartridge. Sort of like a ball point pen that does not
write, even though you can see through the sides that it has plenty of
ink left in it.
