Harry, I had the same problem with messages on Outlook Express when I had saved too many (thousands). I think initially, I hadn't allocated enough memory in OE to handle that many. (Now, I do that, because the numbers of saved messages are inching up again.)
Anyway, the OE messages are deposited on the MacOS hard drive in a folder called "Microsoft User Data." So, first I backed up the old OE and made sure I had all the messages backed up too. Then, I removed all the Outlook Express software and installed an upgraded version (if there isn't an upgraded version, try reinstalling the present one...or even installing a different e-mail program). When the new OE asked if it should import messages, I said yes. It imported the saved messages into the updated version, and I could read them again. Don't know if this will help or not.
