Hey Folks,

I was still getting irritated about the DVD burner on my machine.
Because of sage advice from Lee, I ended up taking a long path to
updating the firmware on my superdrive to a newer version than what
Apple supplies. Now everything is just fine.

It's a bit on the arcane side, so I'm not gonna post the details
here, but I'll point you to the right places:

Getting the firmware from Pioneer:

My machine wouldn't boot into MacOS 9, so I went the long way. I
found an OS X updater:

This wasn't enough, because the kernel was not included in the
Pioneer firmware. Luckily this could be found using this person's
advice. Search the following page for PKB2

The only glitch here was needed a peecee to extract the proper kernel
from the package mentioned. Luckily(?) I have VirtualPeeCee so I
could do the extraction and then run the firmware update.

All is well (so far) and the drive burned and verified 2 of 2 burns
(as opposed to 7 straight coasters before).

Bill
