Dan-o (always wanted to call someone that),

Try tossing this file: com.apple.LaunchServices.plist

It lives in /Users/dan-o'shortname/Library/Preferences/
Shutdown the Mac. Then start it back up. Do not do a restart.
But, I agree with Ward. Disk Permissions repair first.
Then, boot from the CD and run Disk Repair just to be sure.
Then, if that fails, give ME the computer and you can jump. :)
