After searching the apple discussion forums there appears to be a known problem with "defective" batteries on the iBook 700MHz 16M VRAM . The iBook ran a reasonable time on a borrowed brand new battery. I will call tomorrow for a warranty replacement. Fortunately I will not have to send it in for service. Thanks...vDog
