Is it in warranty?
Is it out of warranty?

Your hard drive is probably trashed pretty good. Something like that while
it is on will cause the read/write heads to contact the drive platters and
ruin the surface. That could be the grinding you hear. If you can get it
working again, replace the drive.

The memory could be jarred out of its slot causing it not to post or get a
start screen. Among other things.

First I would pull the floppy, cd rom and battery out. Any pc cards should
be removed too. Find where the memory is installed, (either on bottom of pc
or under keyboard) Remove it and reinstall it.
Reinstall the battery and try to boot. Look for a start screen. If yes,
good. If no, don?t be alarmed yet.

YES: listen for more grinding sound. Does it try to boot "Starting
Windows9X" Good. Replace hard drive. Try to back anything up.

NO: under the key board. Look for a button cell battery. It could be shrink
wraped in plastic. Pull its connection, and then remove the main battery.
Let it set for a few minutes. Plug both batteries back in.
Try to reboot. And hope something happens.

If no, something farther down in the computer COULD BE loose.

Also try to plug in an external monitor to see if your LCD back light or
inverter is broken.

If all else fails you can bring it to me and I can dig deeper.
