Hi Mary Kaye,

Rob is exactly right.  You've incurred some directory damage that needs
repair.  Follow his directions.

Indications are that you do not have a hardware related problem nor an OS X
related problem.  Just a damaged directory which can occur through regular
usage of some not so stable system components or applications.  My guess is
you had problems leading up to this.
