Hi Beth,

Below is an Applecare Knowledgebase document that details many of the
factors you need to be looking at in an attempt to resolve your problem.

Terry's advice is a little off the mark. I had to research this as I could
not exactly remember the specifics either. They read as follows:

Installing on an original Power Macintosh G3, or an iMac

If you install Mac OS X on an original Power Macintosh G3 (Beige), or an
iMac with a CD drive tray (Rev. A, Rev. B, Rev. C, or Rev. D), be sure to
install Mac OS X on a disk partition that is completely within the first 8
GB of the disk. If your hard disk is larger than 8 GB and it is not
partitioned or the first partition is larger than 8 GB, you will need to
reformat and partition your disk so that the first partition is less than 8
GB.

In a nutshell, cpus without firewire ports fall into the category referred
to above. You can disregard the above with any firewire equipped cpus.

Pre-Jaguar or not, the basic principles of formatting/partitioning/OS
installation have not changed.
