Show the movie info in QuickTime Player and check out the audio and
video codecs used on the video. Chances are you don't have the
appropriate codecs installed. In particular, the DivX, XviD and 3ivX
plugins have all been upgraded recently. These are among the most
common formats for video on the Web.

For Windows media files, Microsoft has passed on the development to
Flip4Mac [1]. They have a free plugin that will give you some
compatibility with Windows Media files. I've, so far, not been
impressed with it. There has been a fight since spring to get it to
work reliably with Major League Baseball streaming. It will somewhat
work for a few weeks and then inexplicably not work at all for a few
more weeks. (It's in the not work at all phase right now.)
