The display [Cathy-Greens-Computer:~/Desktop] cathygreen% is correct and does show that you ended up with the directory path you were shooting for. The pwd command should spit back the current directory, which is your desktop. For example, here is what my Powerbook does Gollum:~ lee$ cd $HOME/Desktop Gollum:~/Desktop lee$ pwd /Users/lee/Desktop Gollum:~/Desktop lee$ At this point, I'd back stuff up and take a close look at the hard drive because your Desktop directory seems to have gone bye-bye. See if it's there by clicking on the little house icon in the lower-left pane of a Finder window.
