If the ways of old hold true, you've just Zapped the Parameter RAM
  (reset the PRAM) on your machine, which resets its basic start up
  instructions; and because of the unusual one-hand facilitatiion of
  this at the keyboard, it is otherwise known as the "Vulcan Death
  Grip" in those days past.     : )
