most functionality is tied to the motherboard, (aka logic board, cpu etc). usually, a diagnostic tool is run for verification. it's possible that one particular functionality could fail without affecting something else. in the case of your friend, it's probable that it would be more cost effective to replace rather than repair the unit. if one was a tinker(er) a replacement part might be found somewhere to swap in, but the time (cost) involved would be prohibitive. best...jf
