Use disk utility.

Select the erase option then select your disk to erase, then click on
security options, then choose zero out data which is less secure and
takes less time than a 7 pass erase which writes data over the entire
disk 7 times. This option is less secure than a 35 pass erase which
probably, depending on the size of your disk, will take 12-24 hours.

It all depends on how much you care about the info. I have used the zero
out data and the 7 pass erase, but have never tried the 35 pass erase.
