Before the web you had Usenet and BBS boards to discuss topic's At present there are 100,000 Usenet newsgroups on every topic know and unknown. This Wiki article explains it quite well. I spent many a day discussing topics on Usenet discussion groups.
AT&T decided to drop a whole section of newsgroups called alt. due to a few porn o graphic newsgroups.
