Ok battery arrived--delay what with the ice etc and no electricity! Finally got 
back to the 21st century from the 18th--interesting but not for keeps--put new 
battery in and no joy.
Lampshade still dead. No whir. No light on the monitor. No nothing.
What should I try next? If there is a reset on the board I couldn't find it. 
(This is a 17" 800mhz iMac.)
Or should I just get an enclosure for the hard drive and send the imac to the 
great recycling bin in the sky?

 Take out the four screws in the bottom and you should see it when it
